- 23-year old Adele won all six awards she was nominated for, tying Beyoncé’s record for most wins by a female artist in one night. Foo Fighters and Kanye West followed with five and four awards, respectively.
- Bon Iver (Justin Vernon) won Best New Artist (beating out Nicki Minaj, The Band Perry, Skrillex and J. Cole). He said in his acceptance speech, “It’s really hard to accept this award. There’s so much talent out here […] and there’s a lot of talent that’s not here tonight. It’s also hard to accept because you know, when I started to make songs I did it for the inherent reward of making songs, so I’m a little bit uncomfortable up here
LL Cool J hosted the show. It was the first time in seven years that the event had an official host. The 54th annual Grammy Awards pulled in its largest audience ( 39.9 million) since 1984 (51.6 million), as the music industry paid tribute to Whitney Houston following her sudden death. A massive 26.6 million Americans had already tuned in to watch the 2011/53rd Grammy Awards.)
With 31 Grammy Awards, Sir Georg Solti is the artist with the most Grammy wins. Alison Krauss is the biggest winner among female artists with 27 awards. U2, with 22 Grammy Awards, holds the record for most awards won by a group.
12: The most nominations received by one artist at the Grammy Awards in the same year. Back in 1984, Michael Jackson scored an impressive 12 Grammy nominations and won a record-breaking eight awards including Record Of The Year for ‘Beat It’, Album Of The Year for ‘Thriller’ and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for ‘Billie Jean’.
9: The greatest number of awards won in one night by a single album. Both Santana and U2 are tied for the most awards won by one album at the Grammys. Santana’s 1999 album ‘Supernatural’ earned the latin guitarist nine awards while U2’s 2004 album ‘How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb’ has gone on to equal this record since.
